We love this shift. At its heart, a great party is about creating genuine connections and thoughtful table styling plays a huge role in making that happen.
Creating the perfect dining environment doesn’t happen by accident. Cohesive table styling requires careful planning, attention to detail, and a clear creative vision. Below, we’re sharing how we approach table styling for our events, along with practical tips you can use at home!
Lighting
Lighting is one of the most important elements of creating a stunning dining space. You don’t want it so dark that guests can’t see their food, but overly bright lighting can ruin the atmosphere. We love using directional pin-spots to light tables, creating soft pools of light in a darker tent or venue. This draws attention to the table styling while keeping the overall mood intimate.
On the table itself, small battery-operated lamps provide illumination for food and conversation. If the venue (or wind!) allows, flickering candlelight is unbeatable for creating a warm, moody feel. Where real flames aren’t possible, high-quality LED candles are an excellent alternative.
Tip for home: Think in layers; perhaps dim your overhead lighting , be selective about what lamps you turn on and use flickering candlelight to enhance your table styling.
Colour schemes
Before diving into the details of tablescaping, we always start with the bigger picture. The overall party theme and colour palette guide every styling decision that follows.
Colour really informs our decision making, too many colours, or too much of one, can overwhelm a space. Instead, we work within a defined palette. We tend to keep glassware classy and sophisticated, perhaps with a pop of colour in the waterglass, and the linens we keep within this palette too, so everything remains cohesive. Chair seat pads and cutlery colour is always carefully considered, and no detail is too small.
Tip for home: Work in harmony with your home’s decoration. If you have a bold coloured feature wall, your table styling should match that, not be at odds. Or perhaps your home is full of wood and natural fibres, a crisp white tablecloth probably wouldn’t suit that.
Adding personality to your table
A beautifully styled table should feel personal, at Mirage, we always inject personality through thoughtful details. From charger plates and bespoke place names to how we fold the napkin, everything is an opportunity to add personality! For example, place names might pick out design elements from an invitation (like we did for this wedding), or table numbers could provide a theming nod like this Great Gatsby party. These details elevate table styling to being something truly memorable.
Tip for home: Handwritten place cards or designing a special menu at each setting can transform your table styling into something unique and special, and gives your guests something to take home!
Using texture
One of the most effective ways to create cohesive table styling is through texture. Rather than relying on multiple bold colours, consider working within a narrow colour palette and layering different materials. For instance a crisp sage green linen tablecloth would compliment a heavier, textured napkin in a similar tone. a green waterglass and perhaps rustic pottery plates in greens and blues add another dimension entirely. Tip for home: We know this can be harder at home, we have the luxury of choosing from hundreds of styles within our suppliers lookbooks. But table linen can often be sourced easily second hand, something as simple as switching up the table runner can make a huge visual difference!
Floristry and décor
We adore table floristry, so much so that we have an entire blog post dedicated to it coming soon. But beautiful floristry (and infarct all table décor) must always work in harmony with both the styling and the logistics of the meal.
When designing table styling, we have a lot of different aspects to consider. For instance there’s no point having large dramatic centrepieces if the meal is all sharing plates, the waiting staff need space for these dishes. When we know this is the case we opt for lots of smaller bud vases and easily moveable votives so we can shuffle things around as we need.
We have more flexibility when the dinner is silver service but we follow a simple rule: keep bulky décor either below or above eye level so guests can converse comfortably. In some cases, we’ve even suspended florals from the ceiling to maintain visual impact without disrupting the flow of conversation. Great table styling balances aesthetics with practicality.
