When our client approached us after booking Horsley Towers in Surrey, we knew we were in for a fun challenge. This period-style venue boasts a stunning, wood-panelled Great Hall—a dramatic space, but not exactly screaming “Studio 54” or “80s glitz.” Our mission? To turn this medieval marvel into a dazzling 80s nightclub fit for the fabulous Fake Tan Band and a crowd ready to party like it’s 1985!
The Challenge
Transforming a narrow, wood-panelled Great Hall into a high-energy, Studio 54-style 80s party wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. We needed:
- A Band-Ready Stage: It had to be big enough for the band’s energetic set but cleverly positioned to keep fire exits accessible.
- Comfy Chill-Out Zones: Essential for guests to catch their breath in between bouts of dancing
- A Show-Stopping Cocktail Bar: Mirrored, professional, and staffed by flaring bartenders.
The Styling
To bring this vision to life, we pulled out all the stops:
- Wall-to-Wall Wow: We dressed the wood-panelled walls with deep purple draping overlaid with slash curtains to transform the hall’s medieval vibes into pure 80s glamour.
- High-Impact Lighting: We installed a high-level floor mounted truss to hang an array of lighting rigs—a lack of hanging points meant we could the lighting above the dance floor and stage whilst making the most of the tight space. This setup allowed our lighting engineer to work their magic, shifting the atmosphere with stunning lighting states and dynamic gobos as the night progressed.
- Custom Stage Design: The room’s narrow layout meant we had to get creative with a bespoke stage that accommodated the band without blocking fire exits. Compliance? Check. Hassle for the client? None.
The Experience
When guests stepped into the transformed Great Hall, jaws hit the floor. Gone was the medieval baron’s den; in its place sparkled a glitzy, glittering 80s nightclub.
The fancy dress invite set the tone perfectly. From neon leg warmers to sequined jumpsuits, the costumes were just as fabulous as the décor. The buzz of excitement and amazement as everyone entered the party created that unbeatable, electric energy that launches a night into legend.
From dancing to the Fake Tan band’s infectious energy to sipping cocktails from the mirrored bar, every moment was packed with fun and flair. Comfy chill-out zones gave guests the perfect spot to recharge, chat, and dive back into the action.
